3 Tips on Becoming a D.I.Y. makeup Artist

D.I.Y. Makeup: It's the one thing that many women want to feel capable of doing and knowing but not always willing to spend time learning. As with other interests, masterful execution doesn't happen overnight and is an on-going learning experience. How big is your commitment to its education? You already see the benefits of doing it "just right." Is it a time issue? Then you've just got to learn to make some.

Ain't no getting around it. You can watch a million tutorials, but if you aren't committed to practicing, then you're essentially wasting your money to have a makeup collection to do what? Post on social media? That's fine but stop complaining that you "can't do it" if you're unwilling to learn as much as you can about it. If you feel clueless on what to do to start, then here are three tips for what it takes to become your makeup artist.

1.

Commit to learning the process. Like any other hobbies or interests, you find yourself drawn to, makeup artistry is a learning course of action. I don't care how many times you watch your favorite beauty influencers' step-by-step tutorials. Personally catering to your specific concerns isn't a "one-watch-fits-all" event.

Aside from being entertained, consider what you are genuinely learning. If you hear, or see beauty jargon or commonly used vocabulary and don't understand their communication, then it's a sign to find additional industry educators to stretch your knowledge.

2.

Get familiar with products, tools, and techniques. These are the biggies in makeup artistry mastery. Even with the best beauty educator in the field teaching you all they know from firsthand experience, there's always something you can teach yourself about what you are discovering.

When I worked in retail cosmetics, I learned a lot about all three topics mentioned; however, there came a turning point when I had to rely on my experimentation to broaden my range. Beauty books, industry publications, and classes were all instrumental in this part of my development.

The more I played and explored with my products, tools, and techniques, the stronger my artistry hand became. It's been over a decade and I still learn something new and exciting with every exploration. It's like knowing the ingredients, measurements, and cooking methods of your favorite food recipes by heart!

3.

Understand both the methodological and creative sides of it. There's a famous saying in makeup artistry that goes, "There are no rules in makeup." It's theoretically "true"; however, I don't find it to be 100% "end-all, be-all." Makeup Artistry is rooted in both the sciences and the visual arts.

It's a combination of proven methods that use Geometrical shapes to create outlines of the desired look and the "free-flow" of artistic expression. One does not mainly exist successfully without the other.

Have you ever seen a completed beauty look executed that was a bit too "hard on your eyes," yet "understandably creative?" This outcome is usually the result of an imbalance between these two "scales." In my learning journey, I have done this on some level or another.

To best understand how to achieve more desirable results, an elevated expert's assistance helps with refinement. All of the best makeup artists have learned from the watchful eyes of someone with a more delicate hand and expertise. This is an additional part of growth in the area.
